New Year, Prepare Yourself

A new year is right around the corner which means it’s time for new years resolutions. But don’t worry! I am not here to make you feel guilty about all of the goals and commitments you have given up on the the past. Rather, I am here to help you gain clarity so you can be more successful in 2015.

I have nothing against traditional goal setting and resolutions. But last year I came across the idea of choosing a word for the year rather than a resolution. One word you could use to guide every area of your life. Something simple but powerful.

My word for 2014 was reconnect. I had recently quit my job, started this blog, and was motivated to reconnect with my family, and who I was before I moved to Texas.

Now that the year is over, I can happily say that reconnecting was a success. I spent almost 2 months in Florida visiting friends and family and I was able to start dancing again. It has been a blessed year, and I owe this feeling of achievement to the clarity I got from using the “one word” method. If you want to get all of the details, I recommend checking out this site– but below is the cliff-notes version on how to do this.

Step 1: Determine the type of life you want to have by the end of the year.

Step 2: Identify key characteristics and qualities that will make that possible.

Step 3: Pick your word & write it down along with WHY it is important to you.

I wrote my word for 2014 down on an index card and wrote the reasons why this mattered to me on the back. It sits on my desk (or in my computer bag when I travel) and I read it daily- it helped me to focus on what really matters.

Learn from the past, set vivid, detailed goals for the future, and live in the only moment of time over which you have any control: now.
