Choosing an Attitude for Success
The new year is here, and it is the beginning of the first full week. Did you make any resolutions or commitments to yourself? If you were feeling less than inspired in the midst of your christmas cookie sugar coma have no fear. 🙂 It’s never to late to get a new start.
Health and weight loss goals are very common this time of year, but so often I see people fail when attempting to make these changes only to try again the next year, or completely give up. I obviously place a lot of value in eating and exercise, but not for the reasons most people think. I like working with people to improve in these areas because I feel they serve as an example on how to change in many other areas of our lives as well.
I recently reread one of my favorite books by John C Maxwell called Today Matters and it reminded me of how much daily commitments shape our lives. The first topic he covers in the book is the value of having a good attitude and I thought the lessons were very relevant to weight loss and health goals. In the book he discusses how we convince ourselves that life should be easy, and when it is not, it must be because success is impossible. Then If we see someone else achieve what we want (losing weight for example) we get upset. We want the rewards of success without paying the price for it. He says that the key to success is to make a decision and manage it daily. This is a great lesson to learn in weight loss and in life.
“Real, sustainable change doesn’t happen in a moment, it is a process.” John C Maxwell
Whenever you are frustrated with where you are, recognize that you have the power to change it. In order to accomplish anything you need to be very specific about what exactly you want. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
- What exactly do you want to achieve?
- Why does is matter to you?
- What discipline do you need to get there?
- What’s you attitude towards this goal?
John C Maxwell says that our attitude at the beginning of a task affects it’s outcome. What can you do daily to ensure that you have the right attitude to be successful in reaching your goal? Choosing to have the discipline to follow through on commitments to yourself is foundational for living happy life. Choosing a good attitude will give you the discipline to follow thorough. I am going to leave you with a poem I found years back. It helps me to keep the right attitude and keeps me motivated. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Have a great week!
ATTITUDE by Charles Swindoll
“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company… a church… a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play the one string we have, and that is our attitude… I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.
And so it is with you… we are in charge of our Attitudes”
