Reasons to Love fish oil

How to Buy the Right Fish Oil

Fish oil has been popular supplement for heart health but many people still don’t really understand it. This post will explain everything you need to know about the health benefits fish oil has to offer and how to make an informed choice when purchasing the supplement.

5 Reasons to Take Your Fish Oil Daily

1. Radiant, Beautiful Skin. Fish oil supplements will help both fight wrinkles & acne by decreasing inflammation.

2. A Healthier Heart. Omega 3 fatty acids help to reduce triglycerides, increase HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol) and can lower blood pressure.

3. Better Brain Function. Our brains are made up mostly of fat- and omega 3 fatty acids are the good fats we need! DHA is arguably the most powerful of the omega 3 fatty acids and is crucial for healthy brain development when we are young, but the need for Omega 3s continues as we age. Omega 3s help to fight off depression, dementia and other mood disorders.

4. Better Eyesight. Omega 3s (DHA specifically) can help reduce the risk for macular degeneration, dry eyes and even glaucoma.

5. Healthier Joints. The most common cause of joint paint and discomfort as we age is arthritis, or inflammation of the joint. Omega 3 fatty acids help to reduce inflammation and lubricate the joints for better mobility.

What to Look for on the Label When You Buy a Fish Oil

  • At least 400mg of DHA per serving The more DHA, the better, and if it’s not listed, it’s probably not worth buying.
  • Does it require refrigeration? Always store your supplements and medications according to the directions on the label.
  • When is the expiration date? Make sure you have enough time to take them before they expire.
  • What is the serving size? Most healthy adults should aim for 2-3g per day of fish oil -typically 2-3 capsules- though this recommendation may vary according to your specific situation- Ask your Dr!
  • What is the source? Larger, more predatory fish could potentially carry higher levels of mercury and PCBs- so looking for a fish oil made from anchovies, sardines or krill is always the better option. You may also want to look for a product that has been molecularly distilled for further purification (though, I have found it hard to find this clearly listed on the label).
  • What is the coating? A common complain about fish oil is the after taste. Choose a fish oil that is enteric coated so that it breaks down in the intestine, not the stomach.
  • So which Fish oil do I recommend? Omegaplex by Advocare. If fact, consumer labs found it to be one of the highest quality fish oils on the market! … and at less than $0.50 per serving it’s a great deal!

The health benefits of omega 3 supplementation are clear and it’s a very cost effective way to stay healthy. But it is important to remember that no supplement can outweigh the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle. Do your homework before you buy any supplement and always talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start.
