Just Get It Done- The Easy 30 Minute Gym Workout

A few months ago I invited my dad to workout with me in the mornings and to my pleasant surprise, he accepted my invitation. The problem is, he’s not the “going to the gym” type, so I knew that the workouts had to be (1) simple, (2) purposeful and (3) effective.

There is SOOO much information on the internet about working out that it can easily overwhelm even the most dedicated of fitness buffs. The funny thing is, all of the so called “experts” often just confuse and demotivate people (like my dad) as they read the back and fourth arguments about which fitness fad “works best.”

Don’t get me wrong, I love program design as much as any other personal trainer, but the bottom line is that it is really not that difficult to get in shape. It just takes time and consistency…. And it really doesn’t matter if you use free weights or machines, bodyweight exercises, or if you run, swim, or walk. As long as you find the intensity to be challenging enough to break a sweat, but not so much that you have to take a week off to recover you’re going to improve your fitness and see results. Perhaps, the most important part of the workout is that you enjoy it and stick with it.

Below is the workout that my Dad and I do twice a week. I call it the “Just Get It Done” Workout. We start off with 10 minutes on the treadmill, elliptical, or bike to warm up, and finish every workout with 10 minutes of stretching. Do I really think he likes the gym? Probably not, but I know we both enjoy the time we get to spend with each other. Oh yeah, he’s also lost 16 pounds. Mission accomplished. Go Dad! 🙂
